Isn’t It Romantic Gives Rebel Wilson a Turn as Leading Lady

Rebel Wilson is hanging up her supporting character shoes and slipping into a new pair of sized-leading lady’s. The Aussie-actress most known for her turn as Fat Amy in Pitch Perfect is debuting in a new rom-com from New Line Cinema called Isn’t It Romantic.

The film is more of a rom-com within a rom-com as Wilson’s Natalie becomes trapped in one after tussling with a purse-snatcher. The movie is set to premiere on Valentine’s Day and already has enjoyed a lot of publicity. It is clear from pictures and interviews that the cast had a great time, so hopefully audiences will as well.

Rebel Wilson came onto the scene back in 2011 with her debut as Brynn in Bridesmaids. Although Wilson already had plenty of credits from Australia’s entertainment world, Bridesmaids marked her first foray Stateside.

The role eventually led to Pitch Perfect which really put Wilson on the map. In addition to being a comedienne and actress, Wilson is also a writer and a producer. She has starred in numerous sitcoms, sketch shows, live performances, and T.V. specials. Wilson is also accomplished in stand-up.

Isn’t It Romantic is a straight-satire and pulls no punches in its skewering view of all things rom-com. Natalie awakes in a massive apartment, in full hair and make-up, to the most picture-perfect New York morning on record. Not only does the architect comfortably live in an apartment that should be well-outside her price range she has a closet filled with designer clothing.

The skewering does not stop there as the film quickly takes you outside into the idyllic New York City they try to sell in posters. This is the New York of Home Alone 2 where twelve-year-old’s can walk the streets safely, everyone is super pleasant, and there is no garbage anywhere. Read more: Isn’t Romantic Trailer | Glamour

Looking at the trailers one can expect more of the same as the film moves forward. Director Todd Strauss-Schulson reportedly spent hours binge-watching rom-coms so he could accurately depict their well-known tropes.

The film follows a standard romantic triangle, as Natalie finds herself caught between two men. The handsome Blake, played by Liam Hemsworth, who she literally runs into, and her work friend Josh, played by Adam LeVine. Hemsworth is laughably perfect in his turn as Blake, and LeVine appears to be adorable as Josh.

LeVine and Wilson already have some on-screen history as the two played romantic interests in Pitch Perfect. The trailer shows LeVine apparently falling for a yoga instructor played by Priyanka Chopra. This may create a feeling of jealousy in Natalie, but right now that is anyone’s guess.

By far the funniest part of the trailers is the movies nod to PG-13 ratings. Natalie’s attempts to bed hunky Blake are interrupted by the fact that the movie fast-forwards through any love-making.

A fact that annoys Natalie to bits. Isn’t It Romantic should be a delightful romp that sets itself apart from traditional romantic comedy fare. The movie will have a little bit of everything as it even contains a song-and-dance number.
